A Fibromyalgia Patient's Story

August of 1997 began a most unusual change in my life. Extreme pain was taking over my body. On September 16th, I went to my internist because I thought I was having a stroke. I was lucky that after several tests and two weeks time, he diagnosed Fibromyalgia. However, it was the longest two weeks of my life since I literally could not sleep due to intense pain.

On October 4th, I told my husband that I had a choice--either go to the hospital or Dr. Kevorkian. We went to a large teaching hospital where I remained for two weeks. The Fibromyalgia, a chronic myofascial pain syndrome, caused my mind and body to shut down. I could sign my name only with difficulty and needed physical therapy for ten weeks at home. The drugs of choice were amitriptyline and codeine +4.

One year ago, I was mentally and physically dependent. I 'bounced off walls' and was definitely unbalanced. On November 15th, I fell, hitting my head on a tile floor, resulting in a traumatic brain injury. After this incident, my general health deteriorated--more pain, more difficulty speaking, more memory problems. Clearly something had to be done.

Once again, my guardian angel came to the rescue. This time I was saved by Mary Lee Esty and her colleagues. On April 27th, I began a treatment program which has been very successful and enjoyable. I have learned so much about my brain and my body, and I am eager to learn more. A BIG negative has become a huge positive.

The most convincing proof of the power of this treatment occurred in the early phase of my treatment. The QEEG showed a Traumatic Brain Injury that was, in fact, a closed head injury caused by my fall. At that time, I was coming from out of state to the clinic every other week Monday through Friday. After three weeks of treatment, the change in my condition was wonderful.

The combination of the treatment program that I have received at NCW is awsome. The sEMG (surface Electromyography) sessions have been extremely helpful in identifying my pain areas. Now, with exercise and myofacial release, I have very little pain. And when I do have pain, I know how to treat it.

Finally, I have learned Biofeedback. It is interesting, fun, relaxing and energizing.

As a result of the treatment at NCW, I feel better than I have in years. My anxiety level is down, concentration is better, energy is improved. I walk briskly with stability. I look better, feel better and think better. FMS can be controlled. You can stop suffering and start enjoying life again. Take the time to improve your life.
